Mark Vyvyan-Penney | Profile

I have been wood carving for 27 years and occasionally been asked to do demonstrations at historical events. It seemed appropriate to have Bronze-age tools for events that featured the Bronze-age.

We started making bronze artifacts five years ago using a modern gas furnace to melt the bronze. These days we try to use the sort of furnace used 4000 years ago. Ours are made of clay, sand and any fiberous material we can find, like animal hair or grass. The organic matter holds it all together until it gets hot enough for the clay becomes ceramic then it burns away leaving a porous interior which holds the heat better.
